Refurbishment of Palazzo dei Diamanti in Ferrara

About

After a careful restoration and refurbishment by the Rome-based firm Labics – Maria Claudia Clemente and Francesco Isidori – the monumental Renaissance complex of Palazzo dei Diamanti in the Italian city of Ferrara reopens its exhibition spaces, duly renovated, to the public. The architectural intervention enhances the building’s configuration and connects its two wings with a walkway that extends circulation into the garden. This structure of carbonized wood incorporates sliding glass panels that allow a full openness to reestablish physical continuity between the Renaissance courtyard and the rear garden. It brings back the orthogonal patterns that historical documents say existed before, preserving the old trees. The aesthetic coexistence of two opposed arrangements – regular and irregular – is a reference to the different periods that inhabit the palace.
