Stone Sculpture Museum, Bad Münster am Stein-Ebernburg

Located amid gently rolling hills in western Germany, this is a small museum for exhibiting the work of sculptor Wolfgang Kubach and his wife Anna Maria Kubach-Wilmsen, world-famous for their stone sculptures. A gabled-roof barn, built in the 18th century and characteristic of this area, was moved to the middle of the site, restored, and converted into the main indoor exhibition facility. This reconversion aimed to make use of the old barn and create a transparent space suitable for the display of modern culture, but through an architecture that is rooted in the land and connects with local traditions. The refurbishment process included the demolition of the interior partitions, leaving only the timberwork from the upper gables and letting natural light pour down through the gaps into the double-height space, creating a contrast with the concrete walls at ground level. Outside, several new concrete walls follow the natural topography of the terrain, delimiting a series of rectangular courtyards.
