LabOvo – Labiomista pavilion in Genk

Covering 24 hectares, The Biomist in the city of Genk, in the Belgian province of Limburg, is a complex devoted to biocultural diversity that includes the studio of artist Koen Vanmechelen and the Cosmopolitan Cultural Park, where the LlabOvo pavilion is. A work of the Antwerp firm led by Kurt Van Belle and Patricia Medina Prieto, the concrete construction features veterinary facilities, a workshop space, and a café. The sculptural building is composed of four identical arches chained together – two open and two closed – which hold up a cantilevered roof that serves as a viewing terrace. A central opening in the roof lets in natural light, casting a changing play of light and shadow throughout the day.
