Winter Pavilion in Alcalá de la Selva (Teruel)

About

In the Sierra de Gúdar, Alcalá de la Selva (Teruel), an architectural intervention has enlarged the social area of a country house, annexing a pavilion – intended as an auxiliary space – that deliberately contrasts with its surroundings. Its design adapts to the natural environment, with a bold abstract form facing south and east to maximize solar gain. The extension connects with the original residence by means of an old staircase, rising mid-height with respect to the ground. Beneath the building, a semi-buried porch built with steel increases the possibilities for using an outdoor space protected against wind. This porch opens out to the landscape via a stepped ramp. The new pavilion is fully executed through dry construction, with cross-laminated timber panels inside and an exterior cladding of thermo-lacquered profiled sheet metal. The indoor space incorporates a partial mezzanine. The east and south facades are open to the landscape and the sun, while the more closed north side features a large window that frames the natural environs.
