Kindergarten in Piove di Sacco

About

In Piove di Sacco (Padua), Kinder Rain was thought up to feel like a village, composed of pyramidal volumes connected by open courtyards that engage in direct dialogue with the landscape. The Italian firm AACM – Atelier Architettura Chinelo Morandi designed this 672-square-meter preschool without corridors. Circulation spaces become teaching and playing spots, and children are induced to be in continuous interaction. AACM drew on the casone, the Veneto region’s cabins for farmers and fishermen that were originally built with straw, reeds, and mud, characterized by sloped roofs. Three classrooms stand out as unique volumes within a continuous enclosure of terracotta tiles, recalling the tradition of clay construction. At the base, a reddish-pigmented concrete perimeter bench serves as both furniture and a play threshold. Inside the classrooms, the pyramidal ceilings culminate in skylights and are clad in wood fiber panels that improve acoustics and offer a particular take on local heritage. Though compact in appearance, the building presents a balanced interplay of solids and voids. Each classroom extends toward an outdoor classroom, expanding the educational space beyond the walls, while also facing the central agora. The result is a synthesis of memory and innovation, a space where contemporary pedagogy coexists naturally with the architectural roots of the region.
